I really love traveling by myself.. Preferably off the beaten track. It is the best way to get to know new cultures. It is also easier to get to meet locals who sometimes even invite you over for dinner. This is such a nice thing about traveling: Eating with strangers who become friends and try new dishes every day. However, food is also the number one thing I miss most while being abroad. And good bread/Knäckebrot is the number one thing of the number one thing I miss most. My top five food cravings are:

  1. bread/Knäckebrot
  2. fresh vegetables (depending where I am)
  3. Gorgonzola
  4. more bread
  5. even more bread

Now.. while living in Barcelona I have already experimented a lot with baking my own bread and Knäckebrot. To be honest, I am hooorrible at baking. I don’t know why, but cakes always turn out as stones, breads or burned from the outside. Luckily, because everything which comes out of my oven taste like bread anyway I am quite good at baking my own bread. Today is Sunday which means weekly-lunch-preparation-day, so I gave baking Knäckebrot another try. And YEAH! It turned out super delicious! It was so good that we already finished half of it.

For one baking sheet:

  • 1 cup rye flour
  • 1 cup line seeds
  • 1 cup sesame seeds
  • 1 cup sunflower seeds
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • optional: cheese for topping



This recipe couldn’t be easier: mix up all ingredients in a big bowl. Let it rest for 10 minutes and then spread it over a baking sheet. If you want to make it a bit cheesy you can add a bit of cheese on top. Then let it bake at 170° C. When it gets already a bit firm, cut it into the preferred pieces, since it can be difficult to cut them later. It takes aproximately 30 minutes, but check from time to time and take it out when completely firm and crunchy.
